Teen Intensive

Ages 13-18

For ages 13-18, these programs are designed to give young dancers a taste of what a professional dancer’s life is all about: refining technique and performance, developing choreography, broadening knowledge of various dance styles, and learning about body awareness, wellness, and health through supplementary classes.
This comprehensive intensive will expose dancers to rigorous training, challenging choreography, creative projects, body care, dance photoshoot, and final performance. Faculty includes Bessie Award winner Sharon Skepple Mayfield from the renowned Garth Fagan Dance company in NY, home company of TWDCC Artistic Director Micha Scott, and masterclasses with professional dance artists.

Ballet Bootcamps

Intermediate: Levels 2B-3
Advanced: Levels 4-5

This week-long intensive is intended for intermediate and advanced ballet students who want to further their technique and artistry. Each day will begin with a ballet technique class followed by a pointe/pre-pointe and strengthening class. The day will end with variations class where dancers will learn solo choreography from famous ballets. Family and friends are invited to the end of the final class each Friday for an informal performance of the variations the dancers have been working on. Dancers must wear either tights and a leotard or a tight-fitting shirt and leggings. All dancers must wear ballet or pointe shoes. Hair should be worn in a bun or pulled back out of the face if it is short.
Note: Good ballet technique achieved through proper training is essential for a career in any style of dance! Attending the ballet intensive will improve your technique, strength, flexibility, musicality, and artistry giving you a leg up for the coming dance season and your dance career.

Ages 5-10

Our week-long camps explore world cultures through dance immersion in Modern dance technique and the country or culture being studied that week, as well as arts & crafts, in-depth and age-appropriate learning, and lots of FUN!

Each week offers opportunities to build skills in a dynamic environment, grow artistically with TWDCC artists, perform in a show for families, and meet new friends.

Choose “Summer Programs 2023.” Then type in the name of the program (ex: preteen, teen, camp) and hit “Apply.”

6. Click on the name of the program you want to enroll in, then click “Yes.”

7. After enrolling each dancer in all their chosen programs, click the blue “CHECKOUT”.

Micha Scott

Modern Intensive
Micha Scott is a Modern dancer, instructor and choreographer. A former Principal dancer with the renowned Garth Fagan Dance, Micha is Artistic Director at Tannery World Dance & Cultural Center (since 2011), resident choreographer at Mountain School (since 2008), dance instructor at Dancenter (since 2008), and lead teacher in Tandy Beal’s in-school residency program ArtSmart (since 2016). Over the past 12 years she has also taught at Motion Pacific, Steps, No Limits, International Academy of Dance, Kirby School, Mount Madonna School, Monterey High School, Seaside High School, Cabrillo College, and has held the position of lecturer in dance at Santa Clara University (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015), the University of California at Santa Cruz (2012, 2014), and at the State University of New York at Brockport (2000). She has most recently showcased a solo work commissioned by TWDCC entitled Collective Experience/Collected Responses in May, 2020, and set choreography on Cabrillo College students during the dance department's Winter Dance Concert in December, 2020. In February of 2021 Ms. Scott was the soloist for a work presented by choreographer Norwood Pennewell entitled 'And Still She Moves' for TWDCC's Winter Dance Fest.

Sade Bully

Modern Intensive
Sade Bully-Bell is a Dominican-born medical doctor, dancer, teacher and choreographer, who started her dance training in Jamaica at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and The Tony Wilson School of Modern Dance. She joined The Company Dance Theatre (CDT) at age 13, and after 10 years with the company and excelling in her medical studies at the University of the West Indies, she moved to New York to pursue a career in dance. There, Sade studied at the Ailey School and performed with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater before becoming a principal dancer with the world-renowned Garth Fagan Dance. The New York Times described her “razor-sharp extension and silky gusto”...as “elegance-the blazing sort.”; while the Los Angeles Times called her, “a captivating, versatile and resilient force.” Sade has performed, taught and choreographed extensively throughout the United States, as well as in Europe and the Caribbean region, and is a recipient of Dance Caribbean Collective’s “New Traditions Choreographic Incubator Award” (New York, 2019). She is the proud mother of two beautiful boys, and currently resides in Jamaica where she is the Artistic Director of the dance company, CDT; Co-Artistic Coordinator and Dance Teacher at the American International School of Kingston; and a freelance choreographer of both commercial and concert work.

Sharon Skepple-Mayfield

Sharon Skepple Mayfield (Principal Soloist/ Instructor/Bessie Award Winner) was born in Antigua, West Indies and raised in St. Croix US Virgin Islands. As a principal soloist with Garth Fagan Dance, Skepple Mayfield also appeared on the worldwide premier of Griot New York, aired on PBS’s Great Performances: Dance in America Series with Wynton Marsalis and the Wynton Marsalis Septet, as well as teaching company classes on tour and at the Garth Fagan Dance School in Rochester, New York. After eighteen years, Skepple-Mayfield retired from Garth Fagan Dance in 2006 to pursue a career in dance education. After relocating to Augusta, GA Skepple Mayfield created Mayfield Dance & Music LLC (SMD) to provide modern dance classes in a structured, motivational environment where movement invention is deeply explored and a higher level of discipline and self-confidence is encouraged. This technical training hub provides safe healthy challenges for the developing dancer by preparing them for life, college, and the artistic process of being marketable. SMD exemplifies the importance of training of the body and the mind of a dancer, creating disciplined well-rounded human beings.

Norwood Pennewell

Technique

Norwood (PJ) Pennewell is a 43 year veteran of Garth Fagan Dance. As the artistic assistant to Mr. Fagan, principal dancer, rehearsal director and as of 10 years ago, a choreographer for GFD, PJ has seen the world and has performed on countless stages with the company. He has had the honor of preforming the premier of Griot New York with GFD at BAM, conceived and choreographed by Mr. Fagan with music by Wynton Marsalis and sets by Martin Puryear. PJ along with Natalie Rodgers were assistants for Mr. Fagan’s Tony award winning choreography for Disney’s Broadway production of the Lion King.

Shelby Davis

Contemporary Series

Choreography

Shelby has trained in multiple styles of dance for over 20 years!! She has worked closely with choreographers such as Brooke Pierotti, Marinda Davis, Al Blackstone, Andrew Winghart, and Kirsten Russell! Represented by Bloc Talent Agency, Shelby has worked with many artists, a few being JLo, Little Big Town, Ashnikko, Ingrid Michaelson, and many more. She's also a current company member for MashUp Contemporary Dance Company and Marinspired; The Storytellers. While jumping between the commercial & concert industry, Shelby also teaches & choreographs at multiple studios in North America! She is grateful to do what she does and wishes to continue sharing & expanding her knowledge of dance!

Erika Gomez

Raised in LA and now living in the Bay Area. Erika has been dancing and performing since the age of 6. From hip hop, Cheer, Pom and Contemporary. She has joined many competitive teams along her journey and is now fully involved with teaching others everything’s shes learned. She has performed at Carnival, Knotts Scary Farm Elvira Show, World of Dance and Newport Beach Film Festival. She’s choreographed / taught 3 title winning routines for MKHS all female group, Wod Network contestants Poundcakes, Norcal Dance Arts & Lines Ballet Studio just to name a few. And now she can’t wait to give you her all at this years TWCC Summer intensive! It’s all about details, feeling and performance she says, so get ready!!!

Molly Katzman

Contemporary Series

Composition

Molly Katzman (they/she) started dancing in middle school at Nevada City School of the Arts, and then danced all through high school in the Nevada Union Theatrical Dance program. They attended Cabrillo College where they won the Roberta Bristol award for dance in 2009, then went on to earn their B.A. at UCSC. In 2015, Katzman joined Joe Goode Performance Group in San Francisco as a company member and teaches through their educational outreach program while also teaching at Motion Pacific, Georgiana Bruce Kirby Preparatory School, and Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center in Santa Cruz.

Rachel Peterson started dancing at age four and began teaching at age seventeen. She has trained in and taught a wide variety of styles including tap, jazz, ballet, acrobatics, contemporary, and modern. My practice of Yoga began in 2011 as an exploration of connection to self through movement and focus. In 2017, I received my YTT with Victor Dubin of Nourish Santa Cruz, where I gained a deep understanding of community, equity and inclusivity. I hope to connect more to the community which makes Santa Cruz the place that is; the creatives & the conscious. I always do my best to make my classes accessible, light hearted and grounding.

Violet Forbes is a TWDCC graduate and a current student at Cabrillo College. This past year she taught elementary dance at Mount Madonna School, as well as being a TA at TWDCC. She loves to tell stories through movement and looks forward to creating a new story with the dancers.

Angela Chambers

Angela Chambers, an Oakland native, raised in Berkeley, spent most of her young life performing Musical Theater. Introduced to formal and contemporary training upon moving to Santa Cruz to attend UCSC, Angela has had the privilege to develop and expand her knowledge of (and relationship with) dance not only as an art form, but as a tool for personal growth and even as a catalyst for social change. At UCSC, Angela performed, directed and choreographed in many student and faculty-led productions; after graduating in 2014 with a BA in Intensive Psychology and Dance, Angela continues this work as a performer and choreographer within the Santa Cruz dance community and furthers her training through residencies and intensives - most recently with Shannon Mather, A.I.M, and Garth Fagan Dance. Alongside performing, Angela spends most of the season teaching at the Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center and Motion Pacific. When not dancing, Angela pursues her love for working with and supporting young dancers and the community as a Y.P.A.D certified Health and Wellness teacher and as the Development Director/Programs Manager at TWDCC.

Preparing dancers for the center stage of life, Mental Health Advocate Jadell Lee is a professional dance educator, touring adjudicator, published author and speaker who brings a fresh perspective of life to audiences across the country. He is an Adjunct Professor of Dance for Seton Hill University, represented by Go 2 Talent Agency, Assistant Director of CRU Dance Competition, touring faculty with Thrive Dance Experience, and guest master instructor for Abby Lee Dance Company. He is the author of Your First Position: A Simple Guide to Self-Discovery, Activation & Breakthrough, a book written to help his readers shine a light on their own journey through social-emotional learning. Jadell Lee holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance from the University of California, Riverside.

Justin Vale

Born & raised in Hayward, Justin picked up dance in his childhood and was initially self taught. Primarily gaining experience in Hip Hop, Jazz, lyrical, and contemporary, he went on to train with different dance companies to then pursuing an interest in choreography. He is grateful to have taught at a variety of studios throughout the Bay Area, as well as having choreographed for the Pilipinx American Student Association program (PASA) at Cal State University East Bay. Justin has performed for The Dallas Mavericks, Newport Beach Film Festival, World of Dance, and Vibe Dance Competition. His intent is to be dynamic by focusing on intricate details and utilizing full body movement. He also hopes to provide an enjoyable experience whilst pushing himself and his peers to their fullest extents

Charleigh France

Charleigh France is a contemporary jazz artist and choreographer who resides in Santa Cruz County. After multiple contracts with performance companies such as Cirque du Soleil, she started judging National and international dance competitions, where she found a passion for technique and injury prevention for dancers. Charleigh now owns a dance studio in Corralitos and can’t wait to share her knowledge with dancers from all over the county this summer!

Maya Dawson

Physical Therapy

Maya Dawson, PT, is a globally recognized manual physical therapist with over 20 years of experience. She completed her training in the Netherlands before starting her career in New York City, where she treated professional dancers, performers, and athletes. She then moved to Oakland to work for California’s Sports and Orthopedic Leaders, specializing in ART (Active Release Technique) treatments on UC Berkeley Athletes. Maya has practiced in Santa Cruz since 2002 where she has worked for Vibrant Care, Seabright Spine and Sport and for Dr Peggy Chen, expanding her expertise in Postural and Pilates training, pool therapy for post-surgical patients, and management of chronic pain. She currently works out of her home office and continues to advance her training while keeping active with her husband, daughters and all of their combined sports.

Practicing yoga for 25 years, I have been teaching for the past 13 years to students of all ages and levels including kids as young as age 5 and adults over 80. My classes focus on the inner practice of yoga: listening to the body and moving into a place of stillness and peace. I teach a wide range of classes including all day retreats, restorative yoga workshops, kids yoga, and meditation/breath work.

Nathan Hirschaut

Nathan Hirschaut, originally from Santa Cruz, CA, recently graduated from The Juilliard School for dance. Nathan has established himself as a prominent choreographer and has received many awards and opportunities for his spiritual and surrealistic lens. Nathan has recently launched a project-based dance company called, HIVE Dance Company. Nathan has also established a business called, Inner Teacher. Inner Teacher creates events and opportunities for people to discover and trust their creative interests. Nathan aims to share his unique whimsical performance art and give platforms for others to develop and trust their creative voices.

FAQ

All students taking Modern, and  Contemporary are required to wear solid colored leotards & black leggings/hair tightly pulled back in a bun or ponytail. Modern and Contemporary require bare feet.

All students taking Ballet Bootcamps can wear either a black leotard with pink or skin-tone tights and ballet slippers, or a white shirt with black leggings and ballet slippers. Hair should be pulled back in a tight bun or a ponytail if hair is short.

TWDCC does not allow dancers to wear short shorts or midriff tops in class.

TWDCC Summer Programs are based on level and age. 

DanceArts Camps are for young dancers ages 5-10.

Pre-Teen programs are geared for dancers ages 10-12.
