Part 1: Introduction to Pilates

This two part class will introduce you to the foundations of Pilates and how to successfully strengthen. Part 1: The Introduction class will teach you how to use your core versus increasing tension in your hips, neck and back.Learn how to avoid common mistakes that cause injury and strain.

Dundun Dance of Guinea, Africa

Dundun Dance is an exciting combination of dance and percussion with sticks originating in West Africa. Mohamed breaks down the rhythms and dynamics of dance that invites all levels to enjoy this unique style of powerful percussion.

About Mohamed:
Mohamed is master of Guinean Music and Culture. Mohamed is a teacher of dance and drumming for all ages and all levels. Mohamed has directed and choreographed for numerous ballet troupes here and in Guinea. He has been performing since the age of 10. Mohamed performs and teaches with Tandy Beal and Company in schools throughout the Central Coast.

Hip Hop

with Anya Setziol

Anya is currently 16 and living in the Santa Cruz Mountains. She has previously danced other styles but is now focused on hip hop. She is looking forward to a career as a hip hop choreographer.

Aerobics Conditioning with Aliya!

with Aliya Glatt

In this fun and upbeat conditioning class, participants will get their heart rates up while enjoying a full-body workout. We’ll start with simple dance movements to get our bodies warm, and then transition to strengthening exercises for upper body and core conditioning. The class will end with juicy movement and stretching.

About Aliya:
Aliya has been dancing for 11 years and has been at the Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center since 2017. At 17, she enjoys practicing and performing in modern, ballet, contemporary, and jazz styles. Aliya loves dance because it gives her an outlet to move creatively and improve both mental and physical strength. Outside of dance, Aliya is also an Honors student at Cabrillo. She hopes to transfer to UCLA in fall 2021 as an Anthropology major.

Qigong for Health

Taiji Standing Meditation, (Zhan Zhuang), is a qigong that teaches body alignment, grounding, breathing, calmness and energy circulation. The Eight Pieces of Brocade, (Baduanjin), is a good beginner’s set of Taoist style qigong. This qigong channels energy throughout the body and belongs to the category of medical qigong.

About Linda:
Linda Gerson is a certified Qigong and Tai Chi instructor through the American Tai Chi and Qigong Association. She has trained in the Chinese martial arts since 1992 with intensive study and training in Taijiquan, Bajiquan, Qigong, Meditation, Eastern Philosophy, Chinese Poetry, and Chinese Calligraphy. From 2016 to present, she has been teaching Qigong and Tai Chi classes at the Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center in Santa Cruz.

Alongside her work as an artist, Angela is currently the Development Director and Youth Programming Manager for the Tannery World Dance & Cultural Center, and a youth teaching artist and wellness mentor within the county.

Contemporary Dance for Teens/Adults

with Madi McGain

This class will include exploring movement dynamics, finding momentum in movement, floor-work, and the interplay between using muscle and finding softness in dancing. We will utilize improvisation to discover our own voice and creative force from within as well as to explore different textures, qualities, and possibilities of movement. We will tap into the felt experience and find ways to follow our own sensation in the moment. We will gain choreographic tools and practice sharing our own stories through our choreographic choices.

About Madi:
Madison is a freelance choreographer, dancer, and dance educator who's classes are informed from her background in improvisation, floorwork, and modern dance. As a performer, Madison has danced for KayCrudden Co, FlockWorks, Mizanty Moves Dance, Spaces of Fontana, Amanda Selwyn Dance, and Adaptations Dance Theater, among others. She has performed at venues such as: Austin Dance Festival (TX), Queens Theatre (NY), Wilson College (PA), Actors Art Fund (NY), Arts on Site(NY) and Temple University(PA). Madison’s work has been presented at The CraftNY (2018, 2019) , 7MPR (2019), Small Plates Dance Festival (2019), and the New Work Series (2019), funded by the NY Council on the Arts and Emerging Artist Fund.

Letting Go of Superwoman: Self-Care for Women of Color

with Maiya Lanae Evans

In her 1988 memoir, A Burst of Light, Audrey Lorde wrote, “caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” This presentation will uncover the unique health challenges that women of color experience, look at how the “superwoman” mentality can be harmful to their health, and discover ways to expand the conversation around mental health.

About Maiya:
Maiya Lanae is a health educator, entrepreneur, and consultant. She currently teaches courses in public and holistic health at San Francisco State University and Skyline College, and is a 2020-2021 EPIC fellow at Stanford University. In addition, Maiya is a lead facilitator for the anti-racism organization, The Mosaic Project. She also hosts a health and wellness podcast called The Hey Girl Health Show, which focuses on health and wellness issues that impact women of color and their communities.

We will also play with gravity and the weight of our bodies and practice releasing into momentum so we can fly, swing, swoop, surrender, yield, and fall.
