George Newell
Mr. Newell relocated to California from Oklahoma in 1970 and established a Veterans Reentry Program at Monterey Peninsula College. After moving to Santa Cruz in 1974 to work for the county, he became County Administrative Officer in 1978. He later served as Deputy County Executive and then County Executive for Santa Clara County until his 2000 retirement.
His community involvement spans at-risk youth programs, neighborhood development, and healthcare expansion. He helped found the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County and served as its President during its 25th anniversary. Since fall 2004, he has directed the Tannery Arts Center and currently serves on multiple boards including Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center, the Museum of Art and History, and Art Forum. He is also an active printmaker at the Tannery.
